LAW ENFORCEMENT

EXPLORER POST 2220

If you are interested in a career in law enforcement, are between the ages of 14 to 20, and would like to find out what law enforcement is all about, then Explorer Post 2220 is for you.

The Explorer post specializes in all aspects of law enforcement: from communications to accident investigation; from crime scene investigation to patrol procedures; and from building searches to Community Policing. We are active in community service and volunteer work.

We are a social organization, but also provide a learning experience. Our purpose is to introduce post members to current law enforcement concepts, ideas and techniques, under the direction of El Dorado Police Officers and post advisors.

What do the Explorers of Post 2220 do?

  1. Meetings: We meet at 6:30 PM on the third Monday of each month at the El Dorado Police Department, 128 N. Vine. We have classes on such topics as criminal law, accident investigation, building searches, self defense, patrol procedures, officer safety tactics, etc.
  2. Patrol ride-along: Explorers are allowed to ride up to 40 hours per month. You get to actually experience what a police officer does while on patrol.
  3. Communications: Explorers may work in the communications room where calls are taken and calls are dispatched to the patrol units. Explorers get to observe, listen and experience the activities.
  4. Special Events: The Explorers are trained in directing traffic and crowd control. They get to assist with various activities that the City of El Dorado holds including parades, 4th of July, Prairie Port, etc.
  5. Law Enforcement Explorer Academies: Every year the El Dorado Police Department hosts junior law enforcement Explorer Academy which consists of 60 hours of various training. After this training is completed the Explorer is eligible for the ride-along program. The academy is based on the actual 14-week course that Kansas Police Officers complete at the Kansas Law enforcement Training Center (KLETC).
  6. Role Playing: Explorers get to do various role playing after receiving classroom instruction. Some of the activities include building searches, accident investigation, searches of persons, and felony vehicle stops.

Our specialty is law enforcement, but we also strive in volunteer work, community involvement, leadership, discipline, teamwork, and professionalism.

We help Explorers prepare for a career in law enforcement and to become a better candidate if they do decide to go into law enforcement.

Post 2220 has only been around since 1996, but in this short time period, two Explorers now work for the El Dorado Police Department and two others work for other areas of law enforcement.

We cordially invite you to join Post 2220!

Please call the El Dorado Police Department at 316-321-9120 and speak with SRO Kurt Spivey or Amanda Scott if this program interests you or anybody you know.
