The chief of police, or his or her designated agent, shall sell at public auction all lost or stolen securities, money or personal property (except automobiles) which shall remain unclaimed in possession of any department of the city for a period of ninety (90) days, or longer, together with all unclaimed or confiscated personal property, of any nature (except automobiles), which shall have been in the custody of the police department of such city for a period of ninety (90) days or longer, and shall place the proceeds of any such sale in the general fund of the city.
